A Yellow Classic for Tomato Enthusiasts Looking for Something Special
'Banana Legs' is a striking and productive bush tomato with elongated, oval, bright yellow fruits. Introduced in the 1980s by tomato breeder John Swenson in the USA, it has since gained popularity among tomato lovers around the world. The name refers to the shape and colour of the fruits – their cylindrical form and subtle longitudinal striping resemble small bananas.
The fruits are around 8 to 10 cm long, with a meaty texture, few seeds, and a mild, slightly fruity flavour with low acidity. This makes 'Banana Legs' particularly well-suited for yellow tomato sauces, pickling, or fresh summer salads. Although a bush (determinate) tomato, this variety grows unusually tall – up to 100–120 cm – yet remains compact and sturdy. It branches naturally, does not require side-shoot pruning, and is ideal for containers, raised beds, or open ground. Its early ripening and resilient nature make it especially appealing to balcony gardeners and beginners alike.

Semina e cura
Sowing and Care of the 'Banana Legs' Variety
Sowing begins indoors from March for early propagation. Seeds should be sown 0.5 to 1 cm deep in seed compost and will germinate within 7 to 14 days at a consistent temperature of 20 to 24 °C. After pricking out, the young plants should be grown on in a bright, warm location and can be planted outdoors or into large containers from mid-May, once the risk of frost has passed. 'Banana Legs' prefers a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, well-drained soil. As a bush tomato with a naturally branching habit, it does not require pinching out or side-shoot pruning. Regular watering and occasional feeding will encourage a high yield. Harvesting usually begins from July and continues over several weeks – ideal for fresh use or preserving.
